It is important to let your new cat become acquainted with the new atmosphere and surroundings at home. The following suggestions will help this process:
- During the first few days, help your cat become familiar with the other family members. This includes other pets, if any. This has to be a slow process, so do not rush this.
- Your cat should always have easy access to “his” room. If he feels a little nervous, then he can retreat to his space. This can help to ease the process, and eventually he will feel comfortable at home.
- Let your cat guide you on how much attention he needs or wants. He will show you if he likes your lap for resting or your hands for petting. Just go along with his demands.
- In order to help your cat be content, be willing to offer him companionship when he looks for it. Do not try to keep him by your side at all times. If he hides under the bed or sofa, do not force him to come out. Instead, let him sniff your belongings, explore, and discover what is hiding under the furniture!
